Werewolf

Standard

Just played two games of werewolf (well, three, but i was killed early in the first one, so it doesn’t count). I need to play games like that more often, it’s quite a lot of fun. Conferences are a good place for games full of deception and mindgames — you don’t really know people well enough to confuse the personal relationship with the game persona, but you get to know them in unorthodox ways through game interactions.

Rightscale, a nice front-end to EC2

Standard

Rightscale is the new name for AWS-Console (a much better name, i must say). It seems to be the easiest way to play around on Amazon’s EC2. I had a server up in minutes, with most of the delays being due to poor wifi. A neat little business model, smoothing out the wrinkles in amazon’s user experience. Kudos to them.

Happiness

Standard

Just heard Jane McGonigal’s talk about happiness. I really, really like her prediction for the future (quick notes, not verbatim):

  • quality of life is the primary metric
  • positive psychology is a principal influence on design
  • the public expects tech companies to have a clear vision for a life worth living
  • to succeed, products/brands/etc. must increase real happiness – the new capital

So refreshing. And the games she’s designed are truly hopeful.

argh.

Just noticed my wordpress installation is borked, people’s comments aren’t visible. Will try and fix tomorrow.

ETech 2007

Standard

I’m at ETech 2007 in San Diego.

Notables:

Twitter-mania is everywhere. PaulK on what twitter has on blogging: “If you’re going to be inane, at least be inane concisely”. And someone on IRC: “Twitter: teaching America about SMS”.

Fun is in. This is a good thing, except that creating fun is turning into a process with all of the serendipity and creativity of adsense optimization.

I’m noticing lots of ads in magazines about wealth management. And homeless people wandering the halls of luxury hotels.

Dean Edwards launches yet another JS library and rules about JS libraries which everyone seems to break with great success.

I’m having fun writing JavaScript. No, really.

The best value for your dollar in accomodations in San Diego is the Downtown Hostel. Reminds me of college coops, in a good way. Biggest problem so far was the earnest young turk this morning who was over-eager to make my pancakes (he’d learned yesterday). You don’t teach me how to make pancakes. (his attempt came out stuck to the pan, mine were gorgeous).
